Governor Cuomo: Keep the Delaware Frack Free!

Governor Cuomo: Keep the Delaware Frack Free!

Catskill Mountainkeeper is calling on Governor Cuomo to uphold the Delaware River Basin Commission's (DRBC) proposed fracking ban and expand it to ensure that fracking's dangerous, toxic fracking wastewater is kept away from the Delaware River - a drinking water source to nearly 17 million Americans, and one of our country's Wild and Scenic Rivers.

Governor Cuomo needs to hear from you. Tell him: NO fracking and NO wastewater in the pristine Delaware River Basin. We cannot endanger the health of local communities, the 17 million people who rely on the river for drinking water, or the river itself just so greedy gas companies can make a profit.

Call on the DRBC to Enact a Full Fracking Ban

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a hard-hitting report earlier this month: unless we drastically change course in the next 12 years, we will lock in the worst climate change scenarios. We cannot continue building out climate-wrecking fracking operations and infrastructure.

That’s why we need you to sign our petition calling on Governor Cuomo to vote for a complete ban on fracking and all its related activities in the Delaware River Basin.

Dear Governor Cuomo and the Delaware River Basin Commission,

We, the undersigned, call for the Delaware River Basin Commission to enact a permanent ban on natural gas drilling and fracking and all related activities (including drilling; fracking; fracking wastewater storage, processing and discharges; and water withdrawals for drilling and fracking) throughout the Delaware River Watershed.

During the eight years of the DRBC drilling moratorium, scientific studies have exposed environmental harms and documented damaging health effects, leading New York and Maryland to ban fracking. The overwhelming weight of evidence shows that shale gas simply cannot be extracted safely.

The DRBC is responsible for protecting the water resources of the Delaware River Watershed — upon which 15 million people rely for their drinking water. This water supply and the Wild and Scenic Delaware River are irreplaceable. It is time to enact a permanent fracking ban NOW.
